Throwing a curveball
Meet Rodrigo Martinez, who used to play baseball to a professional level – but who fell in love with cricket after going to watch a Big Bash game in Australia.
Now he spends his Sunday afternoons playing for Mexico City Cricket Club in the Mexican domestic league, and has travelled to Panama and Chile to represent his country in international tournaments. “It’s the best thing I’ve done so far,” he says.
Rodrigo is keen to get more Mexicans converted to cricket, but in a country so heavily influenced by American culture, thinks the only answer is to head into schools. “I don’t think people my age are going to like cricket. I think we have to start teaching young kids a fun version of cricket, and then we will see more coming through.”
