The other Antigua recreation ground

Fuego awakens in the background at the former home of Guatemalan cricket

No sign of Sir Viv Richards in the colonial city of Antigua in Guatemala, but cricket was played here recently.

A mixture of expats and Guatemalans enjoyed Sunday afternoon matches at the former site of the Antigua International School for a couple of years.

The ground has a lush outfield, is tree-lined and is overlooked by three volcanos – Fuego, Agua and Acatenango.

Fuego remains the liveliest and as we wandered around the ground there were rumblings from in the hills as smoke and gas blew out the volcano.

Sadly, like the Recreation Ground in the West Indies, cricket is no longer as active here.

The Antigua International School recently upped sticks to a new site and hotel developers now have an eye on the field where cricket was played.

It has left Guatemala’s cricketers on the lookout for a new home. Although it might be tough to find one with such a spectacular natural backdrop.
